Netflix Adds Frame Rate Matching Support on Android TV and Google TV

Netflix has announced an app update that brings frame rate matching support to Android TV and Google TV platforms. The update, version 10.0.4, enables the “match content frame rate” feature introduced in Android 12, accommodating both integer (24.000fps) and fractional (23.976fps) frame rates. Frame rate matching ensures that content is played back at the correct frame rate, reducing judder and improving the viewing experience. With Netflix’s support, the largest streaming service on Android, this feature takes a step closer to becoming a standard for streaming services. The update also supports higher frame rates, such as 50fps and 60fps, offering smoother playback. Other streaming platforms are expected to follow suit, providing viewers with a more seamless and immersive streaming experience.

Traditionally, streaming services used a 3:2 pulldown technique, which involved showing one frame three times and doubling the next frame to convert 24fps to match the TV’s refresh rate. Netflix, specifically for 50Hz screens, doubled every frame and added two extra frames at the end. However, with the new algorithm, Netflix delivers 72 frames over a three-second period, distributing them in a way that reduces judder.

The solution developed by Netflix tackles the longstanding problem of converting 24fps content to different refresh rates. Many solutions involve motion interpolation, which adds extra frames to match the native refresh rate. However, this can lead to issues like judder or the “Soap Opera Effect.” Additionally, switching between native and non-native frame rates can cause disruptions known as the “Bonk.” Netflix’s algorithm aims to address these issues, particularly for older TVs or 50Hz screens, providing a smoother and more seamless streaming experience.

While the algorithm’s impact may be most noticeable on TVs with lower refresh rates, it still offers improvements for higher refresh rate TVs, eliminating the need for extensive motion interpolation. Netflix’s commitment to optimizing frame rate delivery signifies a significant step forward in enhancing the quality and enjoyment of streamed content.
